A Trip to Lagos
The historic port city of Lagos is located about 17 km east of Salema and definitely worth a trip. It is not without reason that Lagos is called the pearl of the Algarve.
The Old Town of Lagos
The old town of Lagos is characterized by its winding, picturesque streets, that are mostly pedestrian zones. There are a lot of shops, many different restaurants, cafes and bars.
If you want to enjoy the nightlife you will also get your money’s worth in Lagos. Around the bar “Bon Vivant” in Rue 25 Abril street is the nightlife district of the city. In the surrounding streets you can find several bars and clubs.
Lagos has several historical sites, such as the old slave market, the fort at the harbor entrance or the restored fisher market.
HISTORICAL CITY WALL
The historical “Muralha de Lagos” is a unique city wall because it is the longest of all city walls at the Algarve. The wall comprises almost the entire old town of Lagos with impressive defensive towers and city gates. When you are walking through the city you will pass by the city gates and the city wall.
PORT OF LAGOS
The port of Lagos is divided in the fishing port and the marina “Marina de Lagos”. While the fishing port is only accessible for the professional fishermen of the region, the marina is freely accessible for all.
You can walk from the port to the “Marina de Lagos” over a drawbridge. Around the harbor basin are some restaurants and bars and you can admire the anchored yachts and boats.
On the Avenida dos Descobrimentos street you will find several booths that offer boat trips along the coast and to the caves in the area. We recommend the boat trips to the caves as they are an exciting experience for the whole family. You can also book tours for deep-sea fishing or dolphin watching there.
BEACHES
Of course, Lagos can also offer a great variety of beaches.
The most famous beach is Meia Praia. It is the only dune beach in Lagos and starts directly at the port entrance and extends over 4 km. You can also reach this beach from the city by boat.
Praia Dona Ana surprises by its impressive rocks and cliff formations. You can easily walk there from the city. A staircase leads over the cliffs down to the beach.
Praia do Camilo is also surrounded by rocks and not far from Praia Dona Ana.
